As an equestrian, there’s nothing more important than the health and well-being of our horses. It’s so easy to take their health for granted. Recently I’ve seen a friend’s horse suffering with mild colic. Watching her dealing with the worry over the last few days, it reminds me how grateful we should be when our horse is ok.
I wish Copper (my own horse) was one of those that never seem to suffer illness or pick up an injury, unfortunately he’s not. In fact, that type of horse may not actually exist! When things do go wrong or I see a friend’s horse suffering with sickness or injury, I’m reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of taking care of our horses to the best of our ability.
In these moments, it reminds of the deep bond that exists between us and our horses. Watching friends go through the pain of seeing their horse suffer is a strong reminder of the love we have for them. It’s a reminder of the responsibility we have to ensure their well-being and the lengths we will go to keep them healthy and happy.
I’m grateful that at the time of writing this, Copper is well, happy and healthy. However, a few months ago he was injured (Kick to his knee); I was cold hosing several times a day. He had antibiotics and several vet visits. It was a worrying time.
So, I try to make a habit of reflecting on being grateful. Remember to enjoy every moment I have with him, whether it’s a ride, groundwork, or grooming session.
